The site is very large but also very steep. High
priorities for the clients included creation of a flat lawn area for
children and dogs to play, attractive views from the decked area and
enhancement of the beautiful wooded valley.
A large terraced area of lawn provides the desired flat
area while the rocks and meandering paths stabilize and beautify the slope
as well as providing access and opportunities for children’s exploration.
An orchard area at the bottom of the garden was
enhanced with additional fruit trees. This lower area is quite wet in winter
so vertically positioned
hardwood timber sleeper garden beds were created for vegetables. A small
shed for tool storage and composting bays were also added.
The
plantings included many bird attracting species with an emphasis on tough,
low maintenance and low water use plants. The garden is watered
predominantly with rain water captured and stored on site.
